Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy: Deep Relaxation and Healing in the Body

biodynamic-healing-sessions-2-webBiodynamic Craniosacral Therapy facilitates a deep relaxation of the entire nervous system and being.  It provides tremendous stress-relief and a return to the authentic Self.  It also facilitates the release old patterns of trauma held in the body.

Typically a session for an adult lasts 75 minutes and for babies and children, usually 30 minutes maximum.

Sessions vary greatly depending on your circumstances.  You may experience a variety of sensations throughout the body, and several emotions.

You may also have visual experiences including colors or lights, as well as lucid dreaming.

At the end, you can expect to feel more relaxed and present in your body.

All of these manifestations are normal and provide useful information for you and your process.  A session will often include some dialogue around these experiences to help create more coherency between what is occurring in the session and your life experience.

This form of therapy was originally developed by an American Osteopathic physician Dr. William Sutherland.  When observing the highly specialized articulations of the cranial bones, Dr. Sutherland noticed they had movement.

Through years of close examination, he recognized that the subtle motion of these bones was inherently connected to the movement of the other systems and tissues of the entire body.

The Breath of Life

Specifically, he saw a connection to the cerebrospinal fluid which surrounds the brain and the spinal chord.  Dr. Sutherland’s elaborate studies and research led him to the conclusion that this motion was the underlying force that produced a body’s life.  He called this force the “Breath of Life”.

The Breath of Life manifests as different rhythms in the body, which create the physiological whole of a being. In Biodynamic Craniosacral therapy, three distinct rhythms are identified:

  1. The cranial rhythmic impulse, which is the most superficial of the rhythms, and is expressed at the rate of 8-12 cycles per minute
  2. The mid-tide, a tidal rhythm that expresses at a slower rate (2.5 cycles per minute) and which involves ordering forces in the body
  3. The long tide, a tidal rhythm that averages 100 seconds per cycle in which a deeper integrative force and the initiator of life known as the Breath of Life emerges from the depth of stillness and the center of our being

The Breath of Life acts as a blueprint for the health and wholeness of your being, which is present from the time of embryological development. This force is already a part of your consciousness, and is the essential ordering principle of health, harmony, and balance.

Like an acorn that contains all of the mapping and potency to be a 30-foot oak tree, the Breath of Life is the treasure and map to your own potential and wholeness as a human being. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy connects you to this internal source and can revitalize and recalibrate your entire system.
